My name is Chapin Burgess and I am a dog sledder or musher not something commonly found here in SC. All the dogs on my team are from animal shelters, pounds, off the streets or people give them away. My dogs are all Siberian Huskies which is a very energetic dog requiring a special owner to contain and train them. Basically you can say that my dogs have ADHD. I spend many hours training each of these dogs myself to be an important part of the team. I cannot do without any one of them.
On January 19, 2008 I will be running in a reenactment run called the Serum Run which took place in 1925 in Alaska. It involved teams of dogs running the diphtheria vaccine from Anchorage to Nome this was a race for mercy. This event will take place on the Virginia Creeper Trail from Abingdon to Damascus Va. I will be running with a team of 18 dogs. I want to do more than just run my dogs in the Serum Run I want the run to help a child from our community. What I am asking of the community is to help me find one child age 11-14 who has ADHD to ride with me in the Serum Run. I want to ask people to go to our website www.scdogsled.com and fill out the form submitting the child’s name. Also, I would like to ask the community to donate and help me raise money to send this child to a 4 week summer camp at the Talisman Summer Academic Camp in the NC mountains. This camp teaches children with ADHD how to study and become better students in school, as well as, for the child to have fun doing outdoor activities. Additionally, I am asking the community for help to raise money to pay for cold weather clothing (hat, jacket, gloves, boots, socks) for the child to ride with me since wind chill is a big factor in dog sledding. These clothes will also be used at summer camp. If you would like to submit a child’s name or make a donation please go to our website at www.scdogsled.com and click on the link ADHD Support. The deadline to submit an essay is Midnight, October 31, 2007 Thank you for your help
Criteria: Child may be male or female between the ages of 11-14. The child must have ADHD and is taking medication for this. Deadline for essays is Midnight, October 31, 2007. Winner will be announced by mid November 2007
Essay Directions: Please write an essay about the child at least 300 words, but no more than 500 words. Essays are not judged by writing skills we want to know about the child. The 10 most informative essays will be chosen and an interview with the child will take place. Please tell us why you think this child would benefit from riding on a dogsled with 18 dogs and from four weeks at Talisman Summer Academic Camp. Tell us how ADHD has affected the child’s school, grades, personal life, home/family life, and friends/relationships. Thank you for taking the time to make a difference in this child’s life.
